In May 2005 Okidata introduced the C9600/C9800 series of digital printers as replacements for the C9300/C9500 series.

Print speeds were up to 36 pages per minute (ppm) in color and 40 ppm in monochrome, compared to 30 ppm color and 37 ppm mono for their C9300/C9500 predecessors. Each has a duty cycle of 150,000. OEM web prices at introduction in the US were $6,899 for the C9800, which included a 1GB internal hard drive as standard and $3,399 for the C9600 (no hard drive, 256MB memory).

The C9650 was launched in November 2007 at a price of $3,399. Speed, duty cycle and standard features are the same as the C9600 with the exception of increased memory (512MB).

All three (3) models use the same supplies set, made up of four (4) 15k toner cartridges and one (1) 42k drum unit. Toner cartridges are basically a toner tube and require a chip for proper OEM functionality.

Xerox released their version that was based on the C9600 print engine, the Phaser 7400, in October 2005 in North America. Print speed and duty cycle match the Okidata counterparts, but the supplies set includes lower yield (9,000 page yield) color toner cartridges along with higher yield 18,000 page yield units. Only one yield option is available for the black (15,000 pages).
